Rising Advanced Micro Devices

AMD processors have surged forward over the past decade, and the technology shows no sign of slowing down. With the latest Ryzen CPUs, AMD is challenging Intel head-on.

At DCS ApS, we always offer a wide selection of the most popular AMD components, whether you're looking for the newest graphics cards or processors.

Who is AMD?

AMD is an American multinational company operating in the microdevice industry.
AMD designs and develops technology, AI, and components such as CPUs and GPUs. The company is best known for its high-performance processors, which in recent years have taken significant market share from Intel.

In addition to being one of the world’s leading manufacturers of graphics cards and processors, AMD is also a key player in computer technology, software, and AI.

Facts about AMD:

Country: USA

Employees: 22,000

Business areas: Consumer electronics, microchips, PC components

Revenue: USD 26 billion

Reach: Global reach through own and external distribution channels

Products and global reach

AMD manufactures a wide range of products for both everyday consumers in the form of PC and gaming components, as well as parts like chipsets used in the production of motherboards and other components.

AMD's product categories:

  • Graphics cards

  • Processors

  • Chipsets

  • Memory controllers

AMD Ryzen

AMD's Ryzen processors are among the world’s leading CPU series and often outperform equivalent Intel processors – especially in recent times, as various benchmark tests highlight AMD’s technological progress. Ryzen CPUs feature cutting-edge technologies such as the exclusive 3D V-Cache, which significantly boosts performance, supported by smart AI technology.

Architecture generations

The architecture behind Ryzen is called “Zen,” and it is used across the entire Ryzen CPU line. Zen comes in generations from Zen 1 to Zen 5.

Zen 1: The first generation of Zen architecture – AMD's opening move to compete with Intel. Built on 14 nm, high IPC, and SMT support.

Zen 2: With halved chip size, AMD achieved major improvements in IPC and energy efficiency.

Zen 3: More cores, better IPC, and higher efficiency for gaming and multithreaded tasks – another major milestone for AMD.

Zen 4: Found in the Ryzen 7000 series, supporting DDR5 and PCIe 5.0. Built on 5 nm cores and 6 nm I/O – further IPC improvements.

Zen 5: The latest generation with a new microarchitecture, better branch prediction, and enhanced IPC. Built on 4 nm.

AMD Threadripper

AMD's Ryzen Threadripper is aimed at demanding users working on workstations – typically in 3D rendering, animation, video editing, or other workflows requiring extreme processing power.

Threadripper features a modular design, allowing for the addition of more cores – up to 96 in the Threadripper Pro series. A large cache also improves performance in simulations and video production.

AMD server processors

AMD’s server processors are designed for businesses and data centers with specific performance requirements. These CPUs are branded as “EPYC” and come in multiple generations.

At DCS ApS, we naturally carry these products as well. See our range of server processors here.

AMD Radeon

AMD Radeon is AMD's graphics card series, featuring multiple models across different price points and technical needs.

Radeon graphics cards are built on the RDNA architecture, delivering high performance per watt while supporting advanced features like Ray Tracing and AV1 decoding.

AMD Radeon series:

  • AMD Radeon RX
Targeted at the gaming segment, these cards support Ray Tracing and high-FPS 4K gaming – also ideal for graphic design due to their power.

  • AMD Radeon PRO
Powerful GPUs suitable for CAD, 3D visualization, and ISV-certified video editing.

  • AMD Radeon Instinct/MI
Used in data centers and supercomputers – typically in professional settings only.

Architecture generations

AMD's graphics cards are based on either RDNA (Radeon DNA) or CDNA (Compute DNA) architecture.

  • RDNA 1 – Used in the RX 5000 series

  • RDNA 2 – Used in the RX 6000 series

  • RDNA 3 – Latest generation with enhanced Ray Tracing.

Motherboard technology

While AMD doesn’t manufacture motherboards directly, it plays a key role by designing chipsets like AM4 and AM5 used in motherboard construction.

AMD also supplies memory controllers for DDR4 and DDR5, as well as PCIe lanes for PCIe 4.0 and 5.0.
