Windows 10 End-Of-Life | Time for replacement or upgrading to Windows 11

Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will be phased out and reaches EOL on October 14, 2025. 

As of October 14, 2025, both business and private users of Windows 10 will no longer receive security updates, system updates, or any form of support.  

The PC will still work; however, the continuous updates will be missing, which poses a relatively large security risk, especially for larger companies with many employees and devices.  

This applies to the following Windows 10 products, which will no longer be supported or actively developed: 

  • Windows 10 Pro 

  • Windows 10 Home 

  • Windows 10 Enterprise/IoT Enterprise 

  • Windows 10 Education 

2020's massive demand for work-from-home equipment 

In 2020, the market experienced extraordinarily high demand for everything related to working from home, such as laptops, PCs, and peripheral equipment. This naturally kick-started sales, but many retailers were simply unprepared or not geared for this due to the sudden change in the market situation. 

How does the Windows 10 EOL affect users of the operating system? 

When Windows 10 is phased out and reaches EOL, it will naturally affect the users of the product. Users will experience reduced security and greater risks when having sensitive data on the device, due to the lack of updates and technical support. 

From October 14, 2025, it will no longer be possible to: 

  • Receive free monthly security updates 

  • Receive technical assistance from Microsoft 

  • Bug fixes 

However, it will be possible to purchase extended security updates if, for some reason, you wish to keep Windows 10.

What steps should you take for yourself or your company? 

  1. Check if the PC is compatible with Windows 11 and can be updated. 
  2. If the PC cannot be updated – what is the next step? 
  3. Disposal of older devices. 

1. How do you check device compatibility? 
Microsoft has set stricter hardware requirements for Windows 11, which means that older devices or devices with older CPUs (7th Gen and older) do not support an update to Windows 11. 

How to check:  

  • If you have a few devices, you can check manually on the PC via Microsoft PC Health Check or simply check by going to the following in Start: Settings -> Update & Security -> Windows Update 
  • If you have many devices, you can use Microsoft Intune or Endpoint Manager, which can check all devices in bulk. 

2. Your old PC is not compatible with Windows – what now?

This likely means that you need to invest in a new PC.

3. What do you do with the old PC? 

Electronic waste must be handled responsibly, so avoid simply throwing the old PC in the trash. Instead, you can recycle, resell, or hand it over to a responsible recycling scheme, of which there are now many on the market. 

Always remember to securely erase the data before the PC leaves the company.
